Bartholomew Street Newbury - Talks presented by Newbury District Field Club

A day of talks with a common theme: Bartholomew Street and the various lanes, courts and yards leading off it.

Phil Wood will look at the brewery that dominated the Newbury pub trade at the beginning of the 20th Century - the South Berks Brewery.

Tony Higgott will look at the area's notable buildings, past and present.

David Peacock  will look at the history and architecture of St Nicolas Church, the parish church for all of Newbury up until Victorian times.

Alex Godden, West Berkshire Council's new Archaeological Officer will look at the archaeology of the Bartholomew Street area and what it tells us about the growth of the town.

Phil Wood will return to look at the town's war memorial - where did the design come from, why was it placed where it is and how did they find all the names to put on it?

Finally David Peacock will take those interested around St Nicolas', a chance to see the many features of this impressive church. There will also be an opportunity to ascend the church tower, see the bell chamber and the magnificent views of the town from the top of the tower.
