Newbury - Resurfacing to start on the A4 Western Avenue from Monday 29th September 2014

The first phase of West Berkshire Council's scheme to resurface a stretch of Newbury's Western Avenue and Oxford Road roundabout by the Waitrose supermarket will start on Monday 29th September.

Works are expected to take five nights to complete and the roads will be closed between 7 and 11pm allowing them  to be open during rush hour periods to minimise disruption.

At the end of each working shift all of the roads and approaches will reopen for the following day so that they can be used as normal. From Monday to Thursday the A4 through the Oxford Road Roundabout will be controlled by temporary traffic lights to allow traffic to flow through the roundabout.

The Oxford Road both North and South of the roundabout will be closed and a diversion will be in place. Each half of the roundabout will be worked on separately so it will not be fully closed at any time during the works but there will be no access around the roundabout during the works.

 Both North and South Oxford Road junctions and the roundabout will be open on the night of Friday 3 October. A section of the A4 Western Avenue will be resurfaced on Friday 3 October for which the eastern A4 exit from the roundabout will be closed through to the Robin Hood gyratory (A339) in both directions; traffic will be diverted via London Road and Oxford Road.

 Pamela Bale, West Berkshire's Executive Councillor for Highways and Transport said: "The council is making every effort to minimise disruption during these essential works by arranging the closures during the evening period. However, there is bound to be some impact on traffic flow, therefore we are advising drivers to consider alternative routes while the work is on-going."

Please note this resurfacing work is taking place on the A4 not the A339 as indicated on other websites. The gyratory system which operates on the junction of the A4 and the A339 will be affected by the diversions.
