It doesn't directly affect us here in Newbury, but these are the results for the Purley by-election held on the 28th January. It could be indicative of the way West Berkshire will vote in the May local election

ANDERSON, Catherine Maria UK Independence Party (UKIP) 163 votes

BOWN, Stephen Geoffrey commonly known as BOWN, Steve Liberal Democrat 104 votes

JONES, Richard John commonly known as JONES, Rick Conservative Party Candidate 936 votes

STEVENS, Ian Labour Party Candidate 172 votes

Conservatives at West Berkshire Council last night expressed delight at the result of the Purley By-election, where the Conservative candidate Rick Jones gained more than twice the votes of the combined opposition parties.

Councillor Emma Webster, Chairman of the West Berkshire Council Conservative Group explained: "This is a fitting tribute to David Betts who sadly is with us no more.  I should like to congratulate and welcome Rick to West Berkshire Council and thank the electors in Purley as well as the team from Reading West who helped him to achieve this splendid result."

"We now need to focus on the local elections on 7th May and work hard to secure the right result for everyone who lives and works in West Berkshire."

That's interesting.  Labour used to be the second party in this constituency; looks as if they might be on the road back.
