Violent storm hits Newbury - A339 closed because of fallen trees.

A violent storm hit Newbury yesterday (25th January) Just after 4.00pm. The storm raged for 15 to 20 minutes. It was almost impossible to stand. Many trees were brought down and tiles were ripped from houses in the town centre. There were chaotic scenes in the Market Place as market traders were attempting to close down their stalls.

The A339 was blocked in two places by fallen trees. The first on the hill approaching town from the Swan Roundabout and the second outside Cheam School in Headley. This forced the closure of the A339 between Kingsclere and the Tesco Roundabout in Newbury.

This photograph was posted on Facebook showing the fallen tree just to the north of the Swan Roundabout

Really quite worrying all this.  If it keeps up much longer, that 'lake / reservoir' idea the Water Board came up with in the 1950s might become a reality.
