Newbury - Bartholomew Street including Pearl Building - October 1978

Sandwiched between the estate agent and the Bejam Frozen Food store (left hand side) you can just make out a sign "Dispensing Chemist". This was the temporary location for Boots the Chemist while their old store and that of Timothy Whites was being demolished and rebuilt.

Other names that have disappeared from Newbury that are still trading at this time include, Tandy, P & O Travel, Bennetts Insurance, Ramsbury Building Society and on Mansion House Corner you can see the old Midland Bank.

The top of the Pearl Assurance Tower is still in situ. This was originally the site of the old Regal Cinema.

I remember Bennetts Insurance well. Shortly after this photo was taken I insured my first car through them. It was a 1957 Austin A35 - I was 17 and still at school. The car cost me £50 and the insurance was £80 - all paid for from my Saturday job at Home Charm at 85 Northbrook Street.
