Newbury Waitrose supporting the Greenham Control Tower Restoration Project

The Greenham Control Tower Restoration project has been selected by Waitrose Newbury as one of their three Community Matters projects for the month of May.

At the end of the month, each of the three community projects will receive a share of £1000, the share being based on the number of green tokens that each project receives.

Shoppers at the Waitrose store in North Newbury can show their support for the project by putting a green token in the appropriate box on the way out of the store.  Each shopper receives a free token at the end of their shop, which they use to indicate which of the three projects they wish to support.

Project Chairman and Greenham Parish Councillor Julian Swift Hook, said, "I'm delighted that the Control Tower project has been chosen as a Community Matters project this month, and I'm very grateful to all of the Waitrose customers who have supported us with their green tokens so far.

"As well as helping us with fundraising, the Community Matters scheme helps to raise awareness of our project.

"We're hoping that the refurbishment will be complete by July, and we are looking forward to welcoming Greenham Common's visitors to the new Control Tower Visitor Centre as soon as possible after that."

The Control Tower on Greenham Common was purchased from West Berkshire Council by Greenham Parish Council more than a year ago for £100,000.  The purchase and refurbishment has been funded by a grant from Social Investment Business, who distribute funds on behalf of the Department of Communities and Local Government, combined with a generous grant from Greenham Common Trust.

The refurbished building will include a café and toilets.  It will also house various displays telling the story of Greenham Common, including its military and Cold War history, right up to its current status as an important ecological environment.

If would like to get involved or if you have any interesting items that you think could be put on display in the newly refurbished control tower, please phone Julian on 07799 888444 or email controltowerproject@greenham.org.uk
