Post by: Administrator on August 20, 2018, 05:29:56 pm

Newbury Town Council's World Wars Working Group is arranging a number of events throughout November to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

During 2016, the World Wars Working Group organised a successful series of evening lectures to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.  Similar lectures will take place during the evenings of 15, 16 and 17 November.

In addition, the popular WWI Exhibition will take place again this year at the Town Hall in the Market Place for the final time, highlighting the effects of the war on Newbury and her residents.

Cllr Adrian Edwards, Leader of the Council said, "We are looking for items to display and would ask if anyone has any WWI memorabilia to contact our Civic Manager, Joyce Lewis by telephone 01635 780203 or email mayor@newbury.gov.uk.

He continued, "The exhibition will open on 9 November and continue until 19 November and
of course, whatever is loaned for the exhibition, will be returned to its owner at the close of the exhibition."

The final event being organised by the Town Council is the "Battles Over Beacon" event which is part of a national initiative. This will take place in the Market Place on the evening of Sunday 11 November starting at 6.20pm and will finish at 7.45 pm.

Newbury Town Council are seeking local choirs who are willing to join us and lead the singing of WWI songs to close our event.  Please contact Joyce Lewis by telephone 01635 780203 or email mayor@newbury.gov.uk if your choir would be interested.
