Farewell Freedom Parade through Newbury town centre

Sunday 22 June 2014

42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) is leaving Denison Barracks, Hermitage later this month after almost 30 years. This is hugely significant, not only for the Regiment, but also for Newbury. The Corps of Royal Engineers was granted the Freedom of Newbury on 15 September 1997 and it is intended to re-enact this ceremony during the Farewell Parade with drums beating, flags flying and bayonets fixed.

Residents wishing to view the parade are advised to take up their position along the parade route from Pelican Lane, London Road, The Broadway, Northbrook Street or in the Market Place by 10.00 am to ensure a good view.

Councillor Jo Day, Mayor of Newbury said, "This is an event not to be missed. It will probably be the last occasion when the Royal Engineers parade through our town, and I do hope everyone will be here to give them a good send-off. The Soldiers have been an enormous asset to our town, helping with charity events and supporting our community in so many ways, they will be missed and we wish them well in their new home."
