Pangbourne Pam approves plans for parking meters on the streets of Newbury.

Councillor Pamela Bale, who is West Berkshire Council member for highways and transport has approved plans to introduce ticketed parking bays on the streets of Newbury in an attempt to raise extra revenue from commuters shop/office workers who are currently parking for free.

The roads/streets affected are:

Bartholomew Street (South), The Broadway, Catherine Road, Cheap Street, Faraday Road, Kings Road West, Link Road, Newtown Road, Northbrook Street (outside the pedestrianised area), Old Bath Road, Pelican Lane and West Mills.

Councillor Bale has obviously decided not to listen to protests and representations from shop keepers, commuters and the Newbury Bid. Also a petition containing over 1500 signatures was ignored.

Meanwhile staff at the West Berkshire Council offices in Market Street continue to enjoy exclusive use of their 145 spaces in a prime location near the station absolutely free of charge.

Yes, it's a shame, because this is really quite a good idea.  The real irony being that it's the sort of scheme the LibDems would be pushing on with if they held the ring!  Oh well, politics, politics.
