35-year-old man assaulted in Bear Lane Newbury

Thames Valley Police is appealing for information after a man was assaulted in Newbury on Friday 24th January.

The 35-year-old man was walking along Bear Lane at around 5pm when he has become involved in an altercation with another man.

The man was struck once in the face by the man, who then walked off in the direction of nearby A339 dual carriageway.

The man is described as white, and was with a woman. No further details are available at this time.

The victim was assisted by a passing member of the public, who took him to the West Berkshire Community Hospital.

However, once the severity of the man's injuries became apparent he was transferred to the Royal Berkshire Hospital where he remains at this time.

Det Con Greg Hulse of Newbury CID said: "The investigation is still at a very early stage and we are still trying to piece together the circumstances that led to the assault.

"The injuries sustained by the victim are very serious and it appears that he will lose the sight in his right eye as a result of the assault.

"This is a very busy road and there would have been a lot of people around who would have potentially seen this incident and I am very keen for them to come forward and speak to us as soon as possible.

"I would also be keen to speak to anyone who can provide information on the movements of the man that carried out the assault. Did you see this man either before or after the assault?"

If you have any information please contact Det Con Hulse from Newbury police station via the Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 101.

If you don't want to speak directly to the police you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
