I remember Bennetts Insurance well. Shortly after this photo was taken I insured my first car through them. It was a 1957 Austin A35 - I was 17 and still at school. The car cost me £50 and the insurance was £80 - all paid for from my Saturday job at Home Charm at 85 Northbrook Street.

My dad used to park outsde St Mary's Almshouses when we went to the library. I clearly remember the overgrown front courtyard and a sign warning about falling slates. If you look closely you can still see traces of whitewash on the adjoining buildings!

Loving the 'then' photo. What's really noticeable is how built up the area is behind the main streets in the Cheap St, Bartholomew St, Market St triangle. I know part of this was Plenty's works, but was the remainder housing or workshops etc belonging to businesses fronting the streets? If housing, I would love to hear memories of people who lived there.

Good spot Uncle...also I see Elliott's factory still very much standing. I believe they closed in 1975 though I daresay the buildings remained for a year or two after. You can also clearly see a gap in the buildings in Oxford Street - seem to remember this was a garage forecourt called Martin & Chillingworth.

I think probably not later than 1975 as it appears that the Flower House corner hadn't yet been rebuilt.
