Got something to say? / Re: Christmas Decorations in Newbury.
« on: January 29, 2015, 09:37:25 am »
I have been to many towns with brilliant Christmas decorations. Even Hungerford's decorations are good, but ours are total crap. Why? You would think that with all the money Newbury council are screwing out of the motorist (for parking) they could put up some half decent decorations. I presume they are not doing this as they need the money to give themselves a higher pay rise.
Newbury Town Council get no income from parking, nor are they responsible for the Christmas lights any more (though I believe they put up some of the cash).

The lights are now supplied by the local traders through the Newbury BID.

Victoria St is better known as Jack St.

Looks like a fairly standard pruning of a tree that was getting dangerously big - which other tree needed attention?

Parking problems?  It's incredibly easy to park in Newbury. I can see the cost putting some off, but its easy enough to find somewhere to park.

Have to say, wholly disagree!  I suppose it is 'in the eye of the beholder', but to my mind what has been put up is far more attractive than what went before.  It does pull the two historic buildings together - without intruding itself.  At last, we have something worthy of the Town!

Have to say I disagree!  In my eye the new structure is far too big and overpowering, hiding the end of the Cloth Hall and generally looming over the old buildings - thoroughly intrusive!

And the decision to have a plate glass window on to the street looking in at two toilet doors is bizarre to say the least.

I believe the 'old crest' is supposed to be going back to its original place with Queen Vic.

The museum is due to open in late August.

Did Cllr Pick really call for a return to public ownership?  I thought his (and Dr Peacock's) idea was to establish a Public Right of Way - which ensures free access but does not alter the ownership.

WBC were shafted by SLI in the final days of the Parkway contractual negotiations - too scared to stand their ground in case SLI pulled out they rolled over and gave away this freehold, affordable housing (only reinstated when WBC paid SLI £1 million for it), car parking revenue and God knows what else (we ratepayers aren't allowed to know).

Parkway has, no doubt, been good for the town commercially - a quick look around other town centres in the past few years and one can see that Newbury has ridden the recession remarkably well - in part this must be due to Parkway. In other terms we have a nice new if dull shopping area and ghastly high rise building all along the edge of Victoria Park. And no right of access through to the park from Northbrook Street between Park St and the towpath.

Dendrochronology has recently dated this building at 1497 - it really is Tudor.

West Berkshire Tories voted for a Council Tax increase of 18% for the poorest residents of West Berkshire Council.
So who are the poorest residents of the Council?

Naff English aside, how do the Lib Dems come up with this 18% figure?

I do love unbiased reporting -  ;D

Good news - but I wonder what the selling price is?

Do we need another place like this in Newbury??
Where is there anywhere like this in Newbury at present?

I think the lights are a great improvement over the tired old set that had long ago outlived their usefulness.
The tired old set were dumped a couple of years ago and replaced by LED displays that were almost too dim to be seen if the moon was out.  This years are brighter and hence add a bit more festive cheer.
