I believe the correct collective word for magpies is "a charm".

This is not the case for residents in the Andover Road. We are plagued morning to night by these wretched birds who strut about as if they own the place. We have a group of about 10 to 15, they seem to have increased in numbers this year for some reason.

They squawk from dawn to dusk, particularly if there are cats around. I believe that they are a protected species, but they are causing untold damage to the garden birds. I witnessed them attacking a Blackbird recently and they just ripped it apart.

Is it just localised to our particular section of the Andover Road, or are other areas experiencing this problem?

I can't remember the last time that I went to our local hospital when the car parking machines were actually working.

Now if the revenue is going to a private operator, I'm not too worried. But if the revenue is going to fund hospital services then this is something which should be investigated.

Today all machines now have a special cover with a notice saying that they were out of order.

Anybody have any thoughts or inside information on this?

Whatever happened to the kettle for the staff in the shops and offices in Newbury town centre?

Every morning between eight and nine you can see people hurrying to work clutching their precious cups of expensive designer coffees purchased from the multitude of coffee shops that have sprung up in recent years.

A jar of Nescafé, a bag of sugar and a carton of milk (along with the kettle) always used to suffice.

Got something to say? / Rogue telephone calls from India
« on: March 19, 2014, 02:17:51 pm »
So many rogue telephone calls purporting to come from Microsoft and now they are pretending to be British Telecom saying there is a problem with my Broadband service and they need remote access to fix it.

There are many pensioners being conned by these calls and paying large sums of money for these rogues to sort out non existent problems.

Got something to say? / U turns on mini roundabouts in Newbury Town Centre.
« on: February 20, 2014, 03:32:46 pm »
The number of people attempting to make U turns on mini roundabouts in Newbury is on the increase.

On Monday a woman driver dropped kids off outside the bike shop in Bartholomew Street. She then attempted a U turn on the mini roundabout at the junction with Craven Road. She caused complete chaos because she just launched into a manoeuvre that other drivers were not expecting. There could have been a serious accident if the other drivers had not reacted as quickly as they did. She managed the manoeuvre with a 3 point turn and going onto the kerb.

Personally I would not dream of attempting a U turn at this junction. However, many drivers do.

Checking with a friendly policeman, it is not illegal to do a U turn on a mini roundabout as long as you can accomplish it in one manoeuvre which most vehicles can't at this junction. The technicality comes if you have to reverse i.e. make a three point turn. It is illegal to reverse on a roundabout and you can be booked for it.

Apparently most policemen turn a blind eye because they can't be  bothered with the paperwork.

Got something to say? / How did they film this?

Watch this little clip on the BBC website!

Bit of expert flying to get under the bridge at the railway station.

Presumably the BBC are using drones.

Sorry! This is not a local topic.

Yet another accident at the A343 Washwater turning this evening

Problems at this junction could be resolved by grubbing the hedge out and replacing it with a fence.

This is the hedge on your right hand side as you pull out from Washwater. Visibility is very poor and vehicles leaving the A34 are travelling far too fast as they head into Newbury.

Newbury banks closing time today (Christmas Eve)

Unbelievable with our twenty first century online community. I can't find any information on a Google search or the bank's own websites.

Even ringing the bank helpline, they initially gave me the wrong information.

Lloyds and Barclays in Newbury are closing at 3.00pm.

Got something to say? / Stale news on Newbury Weekly News website.
« on: December 15, 2013, 07:41:16 am »
There is a thread running on Newbury Today (The Newbury Weekly News website) saying that the news is stale. This is incorrect, the news is up to date, but you will need to refresh your browser to see it.

On Internet Explorer, this is the circular arrow symbol on the command line.

Alternatively, you can use f5 or right click on the page and choose refresh from the list.

Instructions (called Meta Tags) are normally used by the web designer to refresh the page for you. On the Newbury Today site this is set to refresh every 120 seconds (2 minutes). For some reason this is not working for every browser.
